New Dragons Rising was created by Grand Master Rudy Torres, renowned for his
invaluable contributions to martial arts. The inception of this initiative was driven by the
vision of GM Torres, alongside friends, family, and fellow martial artists. Their collective
effort led to the formation of a unique method known as the “Mestizo Method,” which
seamlessly integrates various martial arts disciplines, with a significant emphasis on
Esgrima, Kali, and Arnis.
The Mestizo Method serves as an invitation to martial artists and schools inspired by
GM Torres’ son, Rudy Torres Jr., a martial artist extraordinaire. Rudy Torres Jr., under
the tutelage of his father, embraced the philosophy of learning from everyone and
everything, including the intricate techniques of Esgrima, the fluid movements of Kali,
and the practical applications of Arnis. This ethos forms the cornerstone of New
Dragons Rising.

Under GM Torres’ guidance, Rudy Jr. has mastered the art of learning from everyone

Unfortunately, and a great loss to us all, young master Rudy Torres Jr. was taken from
us in a devastating accident. Though he may be physically gone His spirit,
perseverance, inspiration and contribution to life and the martial arts will forever live in
perpetuity.

Biography of David A. Aviles

David A. Aviles was born in the Bronx and raised in Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn. His
journey into martial arts began at the age of 12 under the guidance of Arturo Aviles,
where he trained in the discipline of GoJu Kai. This foundational training set the stage
for what would become a lifelong dedication to martial arts.
Davids commitment to his craft continued through his military service in the Air Force,
where he had the opportunity to train with the Republic of Korean Army during his deployment to Vietnam
. This period of training further honed his skills and broadened his martial
arts perspective.
Upon returning, David continued his martial arts education under several esteemed
Grandmasters. He trained with GM Gerald Gaylord in Ketsugen and Albert Andino in Meibukan
GoJu Ryu, and furthered his expertise under GM Rudy Torres and GM Vincent Tinga.
His dedication and proficiency were recognized as he achieved the rank of 4th degree
under the Menehune system with GM Torres.
In addition to his GoJu Kai training, David is also a proud practitioner of Esgrima and
Arnis Kali. He has embraced the teachings of ; New Dragons and the Mestizo
Method; which have enriched his martial arts repertoire and philosophy.
David A. Aviles martial arts journey is a testament to his enduring passion, discipline,
and respect for the traditions and innovations within the field. His story is one of
perseverance and dedication, inspiring those who follow in his footsteps.
Tony Burgos was born to Maximo Quismondo Burgos and Rosie Moran Burgos. His
father, born in Santo Domingo, Iloko, Sur, was a professional boxer. A field worker,
when he wasn’t fighting, Maximo was a dedicated family man. Married to Rosie, Tonys'
mother and Maximo& love of his life. Rosie, a dedicated wife and mother also a nurses
aide sharing her time between her beloved family and her willingness to help others.
Their love story was one of faithful, unconditional love.
Tony is a lifelong resident of Stockton who believes in the adage, “There’s no place like
home.” He is deeply passionate about his home in Stockton. Tony started training in the
Marial Arts was he was 12 years old and is still a practitioner till today. Mr. Burgos is
also a published poet, which is just one of his many passions. Tony is also an organ
donor. Willing to sacrifice for others no matter the price, Mr. Burgos exhibits what very
few people can even imagine. He deeply cares for others, sharing his love and
compassion physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Mr. Burgos also extends his expertise in his quest for historical and cultural truth.
We are proud and thankful for Tony Burgos for extending his talents, beliefs and
expertise to “New Dragons Rising” the “Mestizo Method”.

Tony Ulep: A Life of Service and
Artistic Expression
Tony Ulep, a Chief Warrant Officer and a martial arts practitioner, has traversed the
globe, immersing himself in diverse cultures through his passion for photography. His
portfolio is a rich tapestry that includes architecture, landscapes, flora, and both
sunrises and sunsets, capturing the beauty of the world around him.
A combat veteran, Tony finds solace and therapy in his photography, using it as a tool to
manage the stress of combat and as a medium to convey his experiences. His
illustrious military career in the Marine Corps spanned from 1988 to 2017, with 15 years
as an enlisted man followed by 14 years as an officer. Tony served with distinction
during;Operation Enduring Freedom; in Afghanistan and ;Operation Iraqi Freedom,;
deploying on three separate occasions.
In addition to his military service, Tony is a committed father and family man who
successfully balanced his duties with a significant civilian role. From 1996 to 2021, he
worked with the City of Sacramento as the Department of Parks Maintenance Manager.
In this capacity, he oversaw an annual budget of 25 million dollars, managed 225 parks
covering 4000 acres, and supervised 130 full-time employees.
We are truly fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated veteran like Tony Ulep
sharing his expertise and artistic vision to elevate the goals of New Dragons Rising
and the;Mestizo Method.;

Biography of Jordan Corralejo
Martial Artist and Graphic Designer
My name is Jordan Corralejo, and I have earned my green belt under our esteemed
Grandmaster Rudy Torres. Over the past decade, my training under Grandmaster Rudy
Torres, though intermittent, has allowed me to compete as an esgrimador and
profoundly shaped my martial arts journey. Throughout these ten years, I have
competed in numerous tournaments, showcasing my skills and dedication to my art.
In the past two years, I have been a proud member of a team that achieved the “Las
Vegas grand champion”, title in team (padded stick) competitions. This accomplishment
speaks volumes about our collective effort and harmonious teamwork.
Besides my passion for martial arts, I am also a skilled graphic designer. I have had the
privilege of creating and designing the logo and visual identity for New Dragons Rising.
Currently, I am associate director of marketing and social media efforts, combining my
artistic talents with my commitment to promoting our association's values and
achievements.

of Mrs. Elsa Torres
A Pillar of Strength and Community
Mrs. Elsa Torres, a 4th-degree Black Belt and the esteemed wife of our Grand Master,
has been passionately devoted to martial arts for over two decades. Her journey in this
disciplined art form has not only honed her physical prowess but also instilled a sense
of resilience and dedication that she brings into every aspect of her life.
Known affectionately as Datu Elsa Torres, her talents and contributions extend far
beyond the martial arts arena. She is a cherished mother and grandmother, whose
nurturing spirit enriches her family and community alike. In her professional life, she
serves as a dedicated employee of Caltrans, showcasing her unwavering commitment
to public service.
Mrs. Torres is also a dynamic community and events organizer, tirelessly advocating for
children's welfare and community involvement. Her efforts have fostered a sense of
unity and purpose among those she touches, making her an indispensable asset to our
community.
In all her endeavors, Mrs. Torres brings a unique blend of strength, compassion, and
leadership. Her support for Grand Master Torres and the new Dragons Rising family is
unparalleled, as she seamlessly integrates her myriad of talents to uplift and inspire
those around her.

and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Mrs. Elsa Torres continues

Biography of David Betts
Esteemed Sergeant at Arms
David Betts, born in November 1968, was raised in Stockton, California. Of Puerto
Rican and Caucasian descent, Betts has worked in the security industry for 10 years
and takes immense pride in his mixed heritage as a Mestizo. He has held the position of
Sergeant at Arms in various organizations, showcasing his unwavering commitment to
proper procedure and responsibility.
Betts's dedication to his duties has earned him the role of overseeing the safety and
security of GM Torres, as well as other members of New Dragons Rising (NDR). His
expertise in martial arts, both in mind and spirit, further exemplifies his commitment to
security.
David's loyalty is evidenced by his 20-year tenure with GM Torres and his continued
drive for success within NDR. His disciplined approach and relentless pursuit of
excellence make him a true asset to the organization and a respected figure in the
security industry.
The Martial Arts Journey of Master Mark Cantu
From Boxing to the Mestizo Method
Master Mark Cantu, born on August 3, 1972, has carved a remarkable path in the world
of martial arts. His journey began informally when he started training in boxing and the
KAJUKENBO style under the guidance of his uncle and Grand Master John Valdivia.
The early exposure to these disciplines laid a solid foundation for his future endeavors.
Seeking to broaden his skills, Master Mark trained in Tae Kwon Do under the
mentorship of Grand Master Robin Taberna. This period of training enhanced his
expertise, but his insatiable quest for knowledge and improvement led him back to his
uncle and Grand Master John Valdivia, as well as Grand Master Saldana. It was under
their tutelage that he achieved the prestigious rank of Black Belt in 2005.
Not content to stop there, Master Mark's journey took him into the realms of Jiu Jitsu
and MMA-style fighting. His commitment to mastering these arts was evident through
his 12 years of competition. Yet, his passion for his original art, Kajukembo, drew him
back to its reformed version, KajuKenbo Karate, as developed by Master Valdivia. His
dedication and skill earned him the esteemed 6th-degree black belt.
For the past 3.5 years, Master Mark has continued his relentless pursuit of martial arts
excellence under the guidance of Grand Master Rudy Torres. This phase of his training
has expanded his knowledge into Esgrima and allowed him to contribute significantly to
the “Mestizo Method” of martial arts.
Master Mark Cantu’s journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication and love for
martial arts, constantly seeking to learn, grow, and share his expertise with others.
